NAGOYA UNION CHURCH
A SMALL CHURCH WITH A BIG LOVE FOR GOD
Happiness can be surprisingly fragile. One encouraging conversation can lift our spirits, while a single harsh comment can leave us discouraged for the rest of the day. Our hearts often "leak" happiness, which is why we need intentional habits that help us hold onto the joy God wants us to experience.
In Philippians 2:12–18, the apostle Paul, writing from prison, offers practical wisdom for living with lasting joy. His message reminds us that while God works in us, we also have a responsibility to cooperate with His work by developing habits that strengthen our spiritual lives.
Here are five habits that can help us keep our joy.
1. Remember that God is with you.
Fear is one of the greatest thieves of happiness. We worry about the future, feel overwhelmed by our circumstances, or fear being alone. Yet Paul reminds us that "it is God who works in you." God is not distant—He is with us, in us, and for us. Every day begins with the comforting truth that we never face life's challenges by ourselves.
2. Choose gratitude instead of grumbling.
Complaining comes naturally, but gratitude is a choice. We often believe we would be happy if only our circumstances changed, yet Scripture teaches us to "do everything without grumbling." This doesn't mean we are thankful for every hardship, but we can be thankful in every situation because God is able to work all things together for good. A grateful heart is far more joyful than a complaining one.
3. Keep a clear conscience.
Guilt and joy cannot comfortably live together. When we ignore sin or allow bitterness to grow, our happiness fades. God invites us to regularly examine our hearts, confess our sins, and receive His forgiveness. A clear conscience brings freedom, peace, and renewed joy. As John reminds us, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us when we come to Him honestly.
4. Fill your mind with God's Word.
Our emotions often follow our thoughts. If we continually dwell on fear, disappointment, or negativity, our joy will disappear. But when we meditate on Scripture, God's truth reshapes our thinking. Reading, listening to, studying, memorizing, and applying the Bible gives us a firm grip on God's promises. His Word washes away discouragement and renews our perspective.
5. Serve God by serving others.
One of the greatest surprises of the Christian life is that joy grows when we give ourselves away. Jesus came not to be served but to serve, and He calls us to follow His example. Every act of kindness, generosity, or service offered to another person is an act of worship to God. We discover lasting happiness not by living for ourselves, but by living for others.
Joy is not something we stumble upon by accident. It is cultivated through daily choices that draw us closer to God. As we remember His presence, practice gratitude, keep short accounts with Him, fill our minds with His truth, and serve others with love, we develop hearts that remain joyful even when circumstances are difficult.
True joy is not the absence of problems—it is the presence of Christ shaping our lives every day.
